Unfailing Strength

Unfailing Strength

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at a proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galations 6:9

Worn Out

Life can be exhausting. It has a way of zapping our strength.

Physically, mentally, and emotionally.

When we are dealing with beyond normal stressors like family drama, financial worries, or career woes, we often wake up feeling more exhausted than before we went to bed.

The Cure for Anxiety

The Cure for Anxiety

“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” Psalm‬ ‭94:19 NIV‬ ‭

An Anxious World

Anxiety is a very real emotion for most of us at one time or another.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, "Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year." ADAA

Anxiety is very real. According to the Webster’s Dictionary, anxiety is described as "a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about something with an uncertain outcome." It can lead to apprehension, excessive uneasiness, and panic attacks.

When your child, spouse, or loved one struggles with addiction, anxiety becomes our constant unwanted companion. Worry is part of everyday life. We obsess about our loved one's safety and the dangers of their risky behavior to the expense of our own sanity.

Why I Finally Decided To Love Myself

Why I Finally Decided To Love Myself

"For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, since we are members of his body." Ephesians 5:29-30 CSB

If someone in your life is struggling with addiction or mental illness, it is hard on the whole family. It sneaks into our lives taking captive everything that is precious to us. It steals our peace. Anxiety takes its place. Joy is lost. Hope is replaced with a desolate spirit.

We wear out and give up. Worry about our loved one consumes us. For me, it took a toll on my body, my mind, and my emotions. I felt nauseated 24/7, and sleep was next to impossible. My thoughts were harried and unfocused, except for one thought, fixing my broken son.

Emotionally, I had a short fuse and became fearful and untrusting. My spiritual life took a huge hit. I spent my days crying out to God in desperation. "Heal my son. Rescue him!"

My self-worth was virtually non-existent. I lived with a constant feeling of shame. I put on a good show, but deep down inside I believed I was somehow to blame for my child's addiction.

The Healer of Our Brokenness

The Healer of Our Brokenness

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 NIV

‬Wounds hurt. We don’t like pain. We are anxious to be healed. We hope that the resulting scar will be minimal, unnoticeable. It might be. It all depends on how deep the injury is and how well it heals.

I have worked in the field of plastic surgery and dermatology for over twenty years. In our office we have seen all types of injuries. From the clean-cut of a surgeon's scalpel to the jagged tear of a dog bite or deep incision made to remove a cancerous growth, wounds come in all shapes and sizes.

Songs of Praise

Songs of Praise

"People cry out when they are oppressed. They groan beneath the power of the mighty. Yet they don’t ask, ‘Where is God my Creator, the one who gives songs in the night?" ‭‭Job‬ ‭35:9-10NLT‬‬

How often I come to God crying and moaning. I'm in full blown panic and hurry in and pray a quick "God, please help me!" I cry and groan and plead.

In those moments I forget to simply enjoy the sweet presence of my Lord. I fail to move beyond my anguish and seek Him and Him alone.

The beauty of His face, the Holiness of His temple, the solitude and peace of His presence...they all await me if I seek Him.

As I choose to seek the Problem Solver instead of the solution to my problem, my heart is filled with songs of praise and worship.

Put On God's Designer Labels

Put On God's Designer Labels

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment…rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 NIV

As we look at labels, we see the power they possess. Labels can hurt, or they can heal. They can help us succeed, or they can aid in our failures. They have the power to shape how we see ourselves. They can change us from the inside out. Labels permeate our souls.

Think back to the moment when certain man-made labels stuck to you. Did they build you up, or did they tear you down? Did they give you hope or leave you feeling hopeless? Did you believe you could do anything, or were you convinced there was no point in trying because you would fail anyway?

Take Off Man-Made Labels

Take Off Man-Made Labels

"You're so stupid!" "You're fat!" "You're a failure."

"She's smarter than you, more qualified, prettier..."

"I can't!" "I am ugly!" "I'm not good enough."

We all know what it feels like to have another someone apply a man-made label to us. Words casually or critically spoken have the ability to weave their way into the fabric of our being. We begin to identify with these man-made labels and let them effect how we see ourselves, whether they are true or not.

Lord of My Heart

Lord of My Heart

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” ‭Matthew‬ ‭6:33‬ ‭NIV

This morning the Lord woke me up with a thought.

“Do you want Me or do you want Me to fix your problems?”

“Well, Lord, I want both.”

“If you want both, you have to realize that you have this all backwards,” He reminded me.

“Lord, what is that supposed to mean? I love You. I praise You.”Gulp. I guess I do wake up with my kid and his problems and the weight of the world sitting on my shoulders.

Faith When You’re In A Funk

Faith When You’re In A Funk

I’ve been distracted lately. The result? I’m tired and feeling flat, just not myself.

I'm in a Funk

I thought a little transparency was in order, so naturally I picked up a pen (or in this case, hit the keys) to write and hopefully bring about some mental clarity.

The first words that came to mind were from the book of Hebrews. I've been spending a lot of time in that chapter lately.

“fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2

Don't Forget Your Rainboots

Don't Forget Your Rainboots

When you pray for rain, don't forget your rain boots.

“Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime; it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone.” Zechariah‬ ‭10:1‬ ‭NIV‬

Many of you reading this may have children or loved ones struggling with addiction. Some as wayward and rebellious. This lifestyle has led them to make terrible choices, some have had devastating consequences. Many of you are wives whose marriages are falling apart, perhaps due to a husband who is caught up in sin and has walked out.

Your worn out. Your faith is weak. Understandable, but God has a plan waiting to be revealed. Now is not the time to grow weary or give up.

It's time to start praying and believing.
