"He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.'" Mark 5:34 (NIV)

When asked by Momentum Influencers Network (MIN) to review the film titled He Calls Me Daughter, I was excited to do so. During my ministry to women with addicted loved ones, I have heard countless stories of daughters who have experienced “father wounds” and how these wounds have shaped the way they understand their identity, relate to others, and alter their perception of God. Many of these women bear the scars of feeling unloved by their earthly fathers, as well as believing they are unloved by their Heavenly Father.

As a result of these painful experiences, some have turned to self-destructive life styles, behaviors like abusing drugs or alcohol, engaging in self-harm, and living in abusive relationships. Because I believe Jesus can heal the hurting hearts of these broken women, I anticipated viewing this movie, produced by the family-friendly, Angel Studios.

Before I share my review with you, I’d like to share a word from Momentum Influencers Network about this film:

"The “father wound” shapes how daughters see themselves, love others, and relate to God. This film brings language and clarity to that pain, while offering hope for healing. Through raw storytelling and spiritual insight, the film reveals how unmet needs from an earthly father can shape identity, relationships, and self-worth. But it also offers a path forward. One rooted in the love of a Heavenly Father who restores, redeems, and redefines what it means to be a daughter."

My Review of the Movie, "He Calls Me Daughter"

Transformed by the Father's Love.

Growing up with a father who loved me, but struggled to show it because of his drinking problem, I wondered if I was up to watching the movie, He Calls Me Daughter. Would it bring up past childhood wounds? Would it trigger memories long ago tucked away? Would I diminish my own pain as "less than" those whose stories the movie documented?

Not sure what to expect, on the first anniversary of my father's death, I sat down on the couch, snuggled under a cozy throw blanket, and pushed the "play" button on my device.

This documentary features the stories of several women, including Christian comedian Chonda Pierce and Lynsi Lavelle Snyder-Ellingson, the owner and heiress of the In-N-Out Burger company that is growing in popularity around the country. Each woman shares her deeply painful, yet hope-filled testimony, of how God touched her life and healed her of the wounds caused her by her earthly father.

Parts of this movie were filmed in the city of Las Vegas, also known as Sin City. I have called Las Vegas "home" for over 50 years. Behind the flashy lights of the hotels, casinos, nightclubs, and strip clubs, lies the stories of real women who ended up here due to little or no fault of their own. While some chased the money and a dream, many fled the pain of their "father wounds." I appreciate how the movie goes behind the scenes to show the ministries who are reaching out to these women to share with them the love of Jesus.

I was pleased to see how this film depicts women from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, and socio-economic status. Their stories were personal and relatable—as they poignantly shared their journeys with guilt, shame, pain, and ultimately, healing through Jesus Christ.

When I finished watching She Calls Me Daughter, I found myself reaching for tissues to wipe my eyes. Yes, I was crying, but they were happy tears. Although the movie brought back some painful memories of unkind words spoken to me by my own father, I also felt blanketed in the love of my Heavenly Father. Looking back to a year ago, how grateful I am that I was able to share His love and forgiveness with my earthly father before His passing.

If you are a daughter who has a challenging or broken relationship with your earthly father, I encourage you to watch He Calls Me Daughter. If you are reluctant, ready, or reluctantly-ready to experience the healing power of Jesus Christ and the fullness of the love of your Heavenly Father, go over to Angel Studios and watch it today. You'll be glad you did. I am!

"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" 1 John 3:1a (NIV)
